Two younger African ladies passengers have been arrested for attempting to smuggle in 9.87 kg of heroin valued at Rs 70 crore, the Commissioner of Customs on the Chennai International Airport stated on Friday.
In a press release issued in Chennai, the Customs stated two African girl passengers, who arrived by a Qatar Airways flight from Johannesburg through Doha, have been intercepted on the exit level on suspicion of carrying narcotics.
One of them was in a wheelchair and on being questioned by the Customs officers about her well being, she gave an evasive reply.
The two have been carrying a stroller bag every having false bottoms.
(*70*) checking the luggage, eight packets containing 9.87 kg of heroin have been discovered and seized.
(*70*) questioning, it was learnt that one girl passenger from Zimbabwe was travelling to India for medical therapy at a personal super-speciality hospital in Delhi alongside along with her attendant, a resident of Cape Town in South Africa, on a visa granted on the premise of communication from the hospital.
Owing to Covid-19 scare in Delhi, that they had landed in Chennai.
