Odisha Police arrested two brothers in Dhenkenal district for allegedly posing as Enforcement Directorate (ED) officers, and extorting money from the federal government officers. 

The police on Sunday mentioned two accused – Tarinisen Mohapatra (30) and Brahmashankar Mohapatra (27) have been arrested by the Special Task Force (STF) of the state police from their dwelling in Dhenkanal city on Saturday.

The accused borrowed an enormous quantity of money and weren’t having the ability to repay the lenders, they mentioned including the duo hatched a plan to cheat authorities employees.

Posing as “Additional Director of ED Bhubaneswar”, they contacted about 300 officers of various authorities departments of the state over the telephone.

They succeeded in extorting money from a few of the officers, and in complete funds of greater than Rs 16 lakh have been traced. They used to take funds by way of PhonePe and GPay, and issued pretend “clearance letters” to the officers, clearing them of all “charges”.

They have been arrested on the premise of a grievance lodged by Chhatrapur sub-collector Debadatta Mohanta, an STF officer mentioned.

A laptop computer, a desktop, 5 cell phones, financial institution passbooks and chequebooks, pretend ID playing cards and 17 ATM playing cards have been seized from them, he mentioned.
