The vehicular subway close to the Arakkonam railway station, which was inbuilt 1865, will get a new lease of life. Southern Railway will construct a culvert and water storage pits to forestall inundation of the subway. The Arakkonam municipality will preserve the culvert and the storage pits, which can take within the extra rainwater from a close-by lake, stopping it from flowing onto the subway.
Built by the Madras Railway, the subway is a brick and mortar construction. It solely carries mild autos like automobiles, autorickshaws and two-wheelers. Buses, lorries and vehicles should take a detour to succeed in each side of the city. It connects the northern and southern components of the city.
‘Prevent waterlogging’
“Water seepage in the subway has been a challenge for many years. The culvert, which will be built by Southern Railway, will prevent waterlogging in the subway, especially during monsoon,” mentioned municipal engineer A.D. Asirvatham.
The choice was taken after railway and municipal officers inspected the subway a number of days in the past. The work will start within the coming weeks.
The subway is being maintained by the Railways. The municipality repeatedly cleans the prevailing culverts and drains. The railway authorities closed the newly constructed pedestrian subway after it was flooded by the water from the lake.
Officials mentioned a new vehicular subway couldn’t be constructed as a result of of the continual motion of trains by means of Arakkonam.
So, it has been determined to assemble a culvert and storage pits as a stopgap measure.
