Amid rising crude prices and inflation, Oil Minister says tax collection on petrol, diesel jumps 459%

New Delhi: Price of home cooking gasoline, LPG has doubled to Rs 819 per cylinder within the final seven years whereas the rise in taxes on petrol and diesel has swelled collections by over 459 per cent, Oil Minister Dharmendra Pradhan stated on Monday.

In written replies to a spate of questions on rising gasoline prices within the Lok Sabha, Pradhan stated the retail promoting value of home gasoline was Rs 410.5 per 14.2-kg cylinder on March 1, 2014. This month, the identical cylinder prices Rs 819.

With taxes accounting for the majority of the retail promoting value of petrol and diesel, the minister stated tax collected on the 2 fuels was Rs 52,537 crore in 2013, which rose to Rs 2.13 lakh crore in 2019-20 and swelled additional to Rs 2.94 lakh crore within the first 11 months of present fiscal 12 months.

In all, the responsibility on petrol price was hiked by Rs 11.77 per litre and that on diesel by 13.47 a litre in these 15 months.

The authorities had lower excise responsibility by Rs 2 in October 2017, and by Rs 1.50 a 12 months later. But, it raised excise responsibility by Rs 2 per litre in July 2019.
