At least eight folks have been lifeless and scores injured after violent clashes broke out between two ethnic outfits in the rugged terrains of Bandarban district in Bangladesh, sparking panic and forcing locals to flee their properties, police mentioned on Friday.
The incident passed off on Thursday evening in Rowangchhari upazila in Bangladesh’s south-eastern Bandarban District, which is a hotbed of insurgency.
“We have recovered eight bodies from the scene,” police officer Abdul Mannan mentioned.
Mannan mentioned the our bodies have been dropped at the upazila headquarters on Friday for post-mortem and different authorized formalities.
Police mentioned almost 200 folks fled their properties following the clashes, fearing violence amongst feuding teams, and took refuge at a military camp at Rowangchhari upazila.
The cause for the clashes shouldn’t be identified.
But police suspect the incident concerned members of the newly-formed outfit known as Kuki Chin Front (KNF), which is the break-away faction of the United People’s Democratic Front (UPDF).
The UPDF is a regional political social gathering based mostly in the Chittagong Hill Tracts of Bangladesh.
Chakmas kind the bulk ethnic group in the social gathering.
Formed in 1998, the group claims to hunt a completely autonomous Hill Tracts via peaceable and democratic means.
Security officers mentioned the KNF emerged as an armed group dominated principally by the Bom ethnic group and reportedly fashioned an alliance with an Islamist militant group in the hills.
The KNF claims to be representing six of the 16 ethnic minority teams of Chittagong Hill Tracts.
They are demanding a separate state be fashioned with a number of sub-districts of two of the three hill districts.
“The KNF’s terrorist activities forced residents there to leave their abode and come to our (army) camp for temporary refuge. We have sheltered them and arranged their food with the help of civil administration,” Captain Fahim, an official of Bangladesh Army’s Bandarban Zone informed journalists.
Bangladesh’s safety companies mentioned a manhunt was underway to trace down and arrest Nathan Bome, the KNF chief.
Meanwhile, authorities will keep heightened safety in the affected areas. In the occasion of additional violence, they could enact movement-restrictive measures, similar to imposing a curfew in the area, officers added.
