Army deployed in violence-hit Manipur, 4,000 people shifted

The Army and Assam Rifles have been deployed to regulate the state of affairs in Manipur the place violence broke out throughout a tribal agitation, a defence spokesperson stated on Thursday, May 4, 2023.

So far, 4,000 people have been rescued by the forces from the violence-hit areas, and given shelter, he stated, including that extra people are being shifted to safer locations.

The Army and Assam Rifles have been requisitioned in the evening, and together with the State police, the forces arrested the violence by the morning, the spokesperson stated.

“Flag marches are being conducted to keep the situation under control,” he stated.

The violence broke out on Wednesday throughout ‘Tribal Solidarity March’ referred to as by All Tribal Student Union Manipur (ATSUM) in Torbung space of Churachandpur district to protest the demand of non-tribal Meiteis, who dominate the Imphal Valley, for Scheduled Tribe (ST) standing.

Thousands of agitators took half in the rally, throughout which clashes between tribals and non-tribals broke out, a senior police officer stated.

Police fired a number of rounds of tear gasoline shells to regulate the state of affairs, the officer stated.

Agitated youths have been seen gathering at Canchipur in Imphal West district and Soibam Leikai in Imphal East in the Valley calling for retaliation, the official stated.

In view of the state of affairs, curfew was imposed in non-tribal dominated Imphal West, Kakching, Thoubal, Jiribam and Bishnupur districts and tribal-dominated Churachandpur, Kangpokpi and Tengnoupal districts.

Mobile web providers have been suspended throughout the State for 5 days.
