Want justice for wrestlers, but after due process of law: Sports Minister Anurag Thakur

Union Sports Minister Anurag Thakur on Friday mentioned everybody desires justice to be delivered to the wrestlers demanding motion in opposition to outgoing Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, but it should occur solely after following the due process of legislation.

“The government favours an unbiased investigation…. All of us want justice to be delivered, but it will happen after following the due process,” Mr. Thakur mentioned in an interactive session on the India Economic Conclave organised by the Times Network.

The Minister mentioned the Delhi Police is investigating the case, which was filed after a government-appointed committee submitted a report on the allegations in opposition to Singh, who can also be a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP.

“There is no question of bias,” Mr. Thakur mentioned to ideas that the delay in motion was as a result of Singh was a Lok Sabha member of the ruling celebration on the Centre.

The Minister mentioned the Delhi Police is predicted to file a chargesheet within the matter quickly. “All of us are in favour of a speedy investigation,” he added.

Mr. Thakur mentioned the federal government had agreed to each demand of the wrestlers, arrange a panel to probe the fees levelled by them in opposition to Singh and requested the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) to nominate a committee of directors to run the affairs of the WFI.

“Be it an athlete or a woman, if any atrocity has been committed, they should get speedy justice,” he mentioned, including that the incidents the wrestlers have referred to had taken place seven years in the past.

Mr. Thakur mentioned the wrestlers had been advised that an FIR may very well be filed at any police station, but they needed the intervention of the federal government.

Several Olympic and World Championship medal-winning wrestlers, together with Sakshi Malik, Vinesh Phogat, Bajrang Punia and Sangeeta Phogat, have been protesting right here demanding Singh’s arrest for allegedly sexually harassing a number of feminine grapplers, together with a minor.
