‘Disrupts sleep’: Allahabad Central University VC seeks ban on use of loudspeakers for Azan

Sangeeta Srivastava, the Vice-Chancellor of Allahabad Central University, Prayagraj, has written a letter to the District Magistrate urging a ban on the use of loudspeakers for Azaan within the morning. Sangeeta stated that her sleep is disrupted attributable to loud Azaan and it solely provides to noise air pollution. Sangeeta lives within the Civil Lines space of Prayagraj.

The letter stated that day-after-day at about 5:30 AM, her sleep is disrupted as a result of of the Azaan on the mike by the Maulvi within the neighborhood. The sleep as soon as disturbed, she stated, “does not resume even after trying very hard”. 

“This also results in a headache, throughout the day, causing losses in work hours,” Sangeeta stated, including that she just isn’t towards Azaan. She steered that “Azaan can be performed without a mike so that others are not disturbed”.

“Even before Eid, Sangeeta said that Sehri is announced on the mike at 4 AM. This practice also creates a disturbance to other people. The constitution of India envisages a secular and peaceful coexistence of all communities, which needs to be practised in letter and spirit,” she argued.

Notably, the controversy over the Azaan dates again to 2017 when singer Sonu Nigam shared an identical tweet. Nigam had tweeted that about his annoyance at being woken up by Azaan within the morning and termed the use of a loudspeaker for the Islamic name to prayer as ‘compelled religiousness’ and ‘gundagardi’

Earlier, the Allahabad High Court had allowed the recitation of Azaan by a single particular person in Uttar Pradesh mosques with out the use of any loudspeaker throughout the COVID-driven lockdown. The courtroom had stated that ‘Azaan could also be an important and integral half of Islam’ however its recitation by means of loudspeakers can’t be stated to be an integral half of the faith.
