Government reduces subsidised tomato price to ₹80/kg with immediate effect in Delhi-NCR, other locations

The Centre will promote tomatoes at ₹80 per kg from July 16, as towards ₹90 per kg earlier, to present reduction to folks from excessive costs of the important thing kitchen merchandise in retail markets.

“There has been a decrease in the wholesale prices of tomatoes due to the intervention of the government to sell it at a concessional rate of ₹90 per kg, at several locations in the country where the prices were ruling exceptionally high,” an official assertion mentioned.

“After a re-assessment of the situation from across 500 plus points in the country, it has been decided to sell it at ₹80 per kg from today Sunday July 16th, 2023,” it added.

Sales have began on Sunday at a number of factors in Delhi, Noida, Lucknow, Kanpur, Varanasi, Patna, Muzaffarpur and Arrah by way of cooperatives NAFED and NCCF, the assertion mentioned.

The sale of tomatoes at discounted price can be expanded to extra cities from Monday relying upon the prevailing market costs at such locations.

“The government of India is committed to provide relief to the consumers,” the assertion mentioned.

The National Cooperative Consumers’ Federation of India (NCCF) and National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India (NAFED) are promoting tomatoes on behalf of the Centre by way of cell vans.

Prices of tomatoes in the retail market stay at an elevated degree of up to ₹250 per kg throughout main cities due to monsoon rains and lean season.

The all-India common price stood at almost ₹117 per kg on Saturday, in accordance to the federal government.

As per the information compiled by the Department of Consumer Affairs, the typical all-India retail price of tomatoes was ruling at ₹116.86 per kg on Saturday, whereas the utmost price was ₹250 per kg and the minimal was ₹25 per kg. Modal price of tomatoes was ₹100 per kg.

Among metros, tomatoes have been ruling at ₹178 per kg in Delhi, adopted by ₹150 per kg in Mumbai, and ₹132 per kg in Chennai.

The most price of ₹250 per kg was in Hapur.

Tomato costs usually shoot up throughout July-August and October-November intervals, that are usually lean manufacturing months.

Supply disruption prompted due to the monsoon has led to a pointy rise in the charges.

Speaking to PTI, NCCF Managing Director Anice Joseph Chandra mentioned tomatoes are being procured from Madanapalli (Andhra Pradesh), Kolar (Karnataka) and Sanganeri (Maharashtra) NCCF has already offered 35,000 kg of tomatoes in the final two days. It expects to promote 20,000 kg in Delhi-NCR on Sunday, 15,000 kg in Varanasi, 10,000 kg every in Lucknow and Kanpur, she mentioned.

NCCF offered about 7,000 kg in Lucknow on Saturday and this itself helped to deliver down the wholesale price from ₹130 per kg to ₹115 per kg, she famous.

Joseph Chandra mentioned, “Further reduction in the price to ₹80 per kg will further cool down the prices in the coming days. We will continue to intervene till the price stabilizes.” Currently, NCCF is promoting tomatoes by way of its cell vans and 4-5 retailers owned by NAFED in Delhi-NCR. It will begin the sale by way of shops of Kendriya Bhandar from Sunday.
