Johnny Depp Loses Battle To Challenge ‘Wife Beater’ Libel Ruling

Hollywood star Johnny Depp has misplaced the bid to overturn a British High Court ruling which had dismissed his libel claims in opposition to a British tabloid accusing the Pirates of the Caribbean star of being a ‘spouse beater’ over fees of assaulting his (then) spouse, actress Amber Heard.

Last 12 months, the actor waged a three-week libel case in opposition to the writer of The Sun newspaper over a 2018 article calling him a “wife beater.”

According to a report in selection.com, Depp claimed that Heard’s allegations of home violence had been “a choreographed hoax.” However, Judge Andrew Nicol had discovered that Depp had been violent towards Heard on a minimum of 12 events, and rejected Depp’s case.

On Thursday, the Court of Appeal refused permission to Depp to attraction in opposition to Nicol’s ruling. The attraction judges, James Dingemans and Richard Arnold, acknowledged: “The hearing before (Nicol) was full and fair, and he gave thorough reasons for his conclusions which have not been shown even arguably to be vitiated by any error of approach or mistake of law.”

Depp sought permission to attraction the ruling, claiming the decide had did not assess the proof correctly and calling for a full re-trial. The actor’s authorized workforce sought to introduce new proof, which they claimed undermined Heard’s credibility as a witness.

Depp’s lawyer, Andrew Caldecott, stated Heard advised a “calculated and manipulative lie” in a pledge to donate her $7 million divorce settlement to charity, alleging the cash has not been paid.

“Had the truth about the charity claim emerged at the trial, it would have materially affected the judge’s consideration of Ms. Heard’s evidence as a whole,” Caldecott stated.

Lawyers for News Group Newspapers, writer of The Sun, stated the proof may have been submitted throughout the unique trial, and wouldn’t have had an influence on the result of the case.
