Rihanna Controversies: Four Times When RiRi Made Headlines


Pop star Rihanna has been hogging all the limelight ever since she extended her support in support of the farmers’ protest in India. The 32-year-old singer trended on social media after she posted a tweet and asked why people were not talking about the ongoing agitation against the farm laws. Rihanna, who will turn a year older on February 20, has often grabbed eyeballs with her posts on Twitter. Be it much-publicized break-up with Chris Brown or her controversial tweet on God, the best-selling artist has remained in headlines.

Rihanna- Chris Brown’s break-up

Rihanna and Brown’s relationship and ugly break-up became the talk of the town. The ‘Kiss Kiss’ singer had assaulted Rihanna after a pre-Grammys party in 2009, which left her with a bruised lip and facial injuries. A judge had issued a five-year restraining order which required Brown to stay away at least 50 yards away from his former girlfriend. The former couple resolved their differences after parting ways post their highly publicized domestic violence case. However, destiny had other plans for them as Brown confirmed in an interview in 2013 that they are no longer together.

The ‘Look At Me Now’ singer had shared a birthday post for Rihanna in 2018. He posted a throwback photo of RiRi to wish her on Instagram.

When Rihanna called God ‘nigga’

The fashion icon set several tongues wagging when she posted a tweet which read, “God is THAT nigga tho!!!” Her post stirred controversy as nigga is an ethnic slur against the black people.

Her fans had to literally beg her on social media to stop using the racist N-word in her posts. The Barbadian songstress had used the ‘derogatory’ word to refer to a toddler on the micro-blogging site.

When Rihanna was accused of cultural appropriation

Rihanna, who launched her cosmetics brand ‘Fenty’ in 2017, faced flak for using an Islamic hadith in one of her fashion shows. Many Twitter users slammed the pop star for using a music track that had Islamic phrases during her show.

Rihanna issued a statement on her Insta story after she was heavily criticised for playing the song at Savage x Fenty lingerie show in 2020. She apologized for her ‘honest yet careless mistake’ and thanked the Muslim community for pointing out a ‘huge oversight which unintentionally offensive.’ “I do not play with any kind of disrespect toward God or any religion and therefore the use of the song in our project was completely irresponsible,” she wrote.

When Rihanna was asked to leave a mosque

The ‘We Found Love’ singer stirred a controversy when she shared pictures from her photo-shoot at Abu Dhabi’s Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. The mosque management released a statement which said that she was asked to leave after ‘unappropriate pictures’ were clicked at the spot. Rihanna had performed at a concert in Abu Dhabi.
