Retail inflation eases to 4.29 pc in April from 5.52 pc in March: Govt data

New Delhi, May 12 (PTI) Retail inflation slowed to 4.29 per cent in April from 5.52 per cent in March, primarily due to easing meals costs, authorities data confirmed on Wednesday.

The Reserve Bank primarily components in the retail inflation primarily based on Consumer Price Index (CPI) whereas arriving at its financial coverage.

As per the data launched by Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, inflation in the meals basket was 2.02 per cent in April, down from 4.87 per cent in the previous month.

Aditi Nayar, Chief Economist, ICRA, stated given the excessive base associated to the availability disruptions seen through the nationwide lockdown in April 2020, the CPI inflation dipped to a three-month low in April 2021, whereas printing considerably larger than the expectations.

Overall, the prevailing localised restrictions seem to have had a restricted affect on costs in April 2021, she added.
