Federica Pellegrini, the 2008 Olympic and a four-time world champion, claimed a 200m freestyle silver medal on the European Championships on Thursday, 11 years after her first continental success.
At 32, Pellegrini has her sights set on a fifth Olympics in Tokyo in two months’ time.
On Thursday, nevertheless, it was 21-year-old Barbora Seemanova of the Czech Republic who denied her the possibility to say a fifth European gold in the gap.
Seemanova gained in a time of 1min 56.27sec with the Italian 0.2sec behind.
Britain’s Freya Anderson, in 1:56.42, took bronze edging out France’s defending champion Charlotte Bonnet.
“I’m actually very joyful. When I got here right here, my authentic plan was simply to swim the relays however once I noticed how good it was going I made a decision to maintain my entry in this occasion too,” said Pellegrini.
“I’m very happy with my time, it’s more than a second better than my qualifying time. It was a very exciting and beautiful race.”
Spain’s Hugo Gonzalez de Oliveira claimed two medals on Thursday night.
First of all, he gained silver behind Romania’s Robert-Andrei Glinta in the 100m backstroke after which claimed gold in the 200m medley, in the method dethroning defending champion Jeremy Desplanches of Switzerland.
Britain’s Adam Peaty, the 2016 Olympic champion in the 100m breaststroke and world report holder, led his workforce to a European report to win the combined 100m medley relay.
“We haven’t been swimming this combined relay for some time,” said Peaty.
“It’s a new element in my schedule. I’m very happy where I’m at the moment as well as the whole of British swimming.”
Hungarian triple Olympic champion Katinka Hosszu needed to accept a silver in the ladies’s 200m butterfly behind compatriot Boglarka Kapas.
“I can’t be glad although it was a very good race,” said 32-year-old Hosszu.
“I don’t have the feeling that I gave everything.”
