Elephants have two nostrils in their trunks. They can even suck up water at a velocity of three litres per second into their trunk and then blow it into the mouth. New analysis ( Journal of The Royal Society Interface) has now discovered that elephants can dilate their nostrils to create more room in their trunks, permitting them to suck as much as 9 litres of water. First writer Andrew Schulz, stated in a launch that the trunks act like suitcases, able to increasing when essential.
The staff studied elephants consuming numerous meals, to decode the suction mechanism. They used an ultrasonic probe to measure the trunk partitions and see how the interior muscle tissues labored. By contracting these muscle tissues, the animal dilates its nostrils as much as 30%. The staff suggests elephants can inhale at speeds akin to Japan’s bullet trains.
