Many Indians, especially Malyalis took to twitter to apologies to Russian tennis star, Maria Sharapova. But why? Here is the reason: After American pop star Rihanna tweeted about the on-going farmers protest, many reactions were sparked by Indian celebrities. Sachin Tendulkar was among the people who tweeted saying that the farmers protest is an ‘internal matter’ and the ‘outside forces’ should not intervene. Many sympathizers of the farmers protest were unhappy about Sachin’s comments on the issue. These unhappy fans took to Facebook to express their discontent, they bombarded Maria Sharapova’s comments section with sorry messages.

All these people were saying sorry for trolling her back in 2014 when she had said that she did not know Sachin Tendulkar. Actually Sachin, footballer David Beckham and golf player Ian Poulter were all present at the Royal Box in Wimbledon during Sharapova’s fourth round match in the competition. When some reporters asked about the sport stars who were present in the Royal Box, she said that she knew Beckham very well and that “He is a really nice person to chat to.” But when asked about Tendulkar, she blatantly said: “I don’t”. This had sparked a controversy on social media in 2014. Although Sachin had played down those comments saying ‘Maybe, she doesn’t follow cricket.’

Indians had trolled Sharapova using the #WhoIsSharapova hashtag. She had received a lot of hate after her comments on the Indian batsman. But with the recent comments made by Sachin on the farmers protest, many of those fans who trolled Sharapova in 2014 took to Facebook to apologies to her for the trolling. Most of those fans were Malayalis as seen from the language used to comment. Here are some of the comments:

It will be interesting to see if there is any reaction by Sharapova on the same. She is currently in Melbourne preparing for the Australian Open grand slam.
