Amid Poll-related Violence, 71 More CAPF Companies Rushed to West Bengal

The Election Commission (EC) Saturday directed the Union Home Ministry to deploy 71 extra corporations of Central Armed Police forces (CAPFs) in West Bengal for the conduct of the remaining 4 phases of polls, official sources stated. The order comes within the backdrop of a number of incidents of ballot violence within the state, together with the one on Saturday in Cooch Behar the place police stated 4 individuals have been killed in firing by CISF personnel, who had retaliated after allegedly being attacked.

Senior officers stated the ballot panel has directed the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) to rush in and deploy the contemporary corporations “immediately”. Till now, a complete of 1,000 corporations have been earmarked for the conduct of elections within the state that has 294 meeting seats.

The new corporations are drawn from the BSF (33), ITBP (13), CRPF (12), SSB (9) and CISF (4). A CAPF firm has an operational energy of about 85 personnel.

West Bengal voted in its fourth section of polls Saturday as a part of the eight-phase polling. The subsequent section of polls is scheduled on April 17 adopted by April 22, 26 and 29.
