Army rescues over 1,000 stranded tourists in Sikkim

The Indian Army has rescued greater than 1,000 tourists, together with ladies and youngsters, who had been stranded at Chhangu in the higher reaches of East Sikkim, following heavy snowfall, officals mentioned.

Severe snowfall in Nathu La, Tsomgo (Chhangu) Lake and adjoining areas on March 16 afternoon introduced down the temperature to sub-zero ranges and impacted the motion of travellers, they mentioned.

Due to the snow accumulation, driving turned harmful, ensuing in over 1,000 tourists together with 200 automobiles getting stranded over a stretch of 15 km, they added.

The Army personnel deployed in the realm launched a rescue effort, and the tourists had been shifted to security following an over eight-hour operation, an official launch mentioned.

“All the tourists were provided with accommodation, hot meals, warm clothing and critical medical support,” it mentioned.
