Bidding started at Rs. 100 for every lemon, and quite a few folks participated, providing bids of Rs 1,000, Rs 2,000, Rs 3,000 and extra.
Among the bidders, Aruldas and Kanimozhi, a pair from Kallakurichi district who have been unable to conceive, bought the best variety of lemons. Panguni Uthiram marks the celebration of the weddings of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, Lord Rama and Goddess Sita, Murugan (Kartikeya) and Devasena, in addition to Ranganatha (Vishnu) and Andal. It can also be thought of to suggest the manifestation of Ayyappan.
