A diesel locomotive-hauled goods train travelled greater than 70 kilometres from Jammu and Kashmir’s Kathua district to a village in Punjab’s Hoshiarpur without its driver at this time (February 25), officers mentioned.
No casualty or injury to property has been reported, they mentioned, and added that an inquiry has been ordered into the incident that passed off between 7:25 am and 9:00 am. The 53-wagon train loaded with chip stones was on its approach to Punjab from Jammu, the officers mentioned.
The train had stopped on the Kathua railway station in Jammu for a driver change and evidently it started to roll down a slope gradient monitor on the Jammu-Jalandhar part, a spokesperson of the Northern Railway mentioned, citing preliminary data. Both drivers- loco pilot and assistant loco pilot- weren’t on board the freight train, the officers mentioned.
Inquiry ordered
The train gained pace alongside the best way, lastly coming to a cease on a steep gradient close to Unchi Bassi railway station in Punjab, they mentioned. Divisional Traffic Manager, Jammu, Prateek Srivastava instructed media that an inquiry has been initiated to know the precise explanation for the incident. Prima facie, evidently the train began rolling down the slope gradient in the direction of Punjab without the driver and his assistant.
He mentioned the train got here to a halt close to Unchi Bassi due to steep gradient, after overlaying a distance of greater than 70 km. The officers mentioned that the train was efficiently halted with the help of sandbags.
Whether the train had been secured correctly at Kathua on the down gradient is a matter of investigation, the spokesperson mentioned and added that an in-depth probe is underway. Railway officers and staffers had been placed on alert alongside the route.
Government Railway Police (Jalandhar) Sub-Inspector Ashok Kumar mentioned upon receiving details about the runaway train all rail-road crossings on the Jalandhar-Pathankot part had been secured.
