Canada on Wednesday finalised conservation standards for marine protected areas that cowl greater than 14% of its oceans, by banning industrial actions together with waste disposal, trawling the ocean ground for fishing and pure useful resource extraction.
The rules are half of Canada’s purpose to conserve 25% of its oceans by 2025, and are available a day after the federal authorities and First Nations introduced progress on establishing what would be the nation’s largest Marine Protected Area (MPA) positioned 150 km (90 miles) off the west coast of British Columbia.
Canada is bordered by three oceans – the Pacific, Arctic and Atlantic – and has the longest shoreline on the earth.
Speaking on the fifth International Marine Protected Areas Congress in Vancouver, federal ocean and fisheries minister Joyce Murray stated Canada can be exploring different marine areas for future protection, together with components of James Bay within the far north of Ontario and Quebec, and Arctic areas within the territory of Nunavut.
“Oceans are as crucial to our survival as the air we breathe and if we truly want to protect the planet, we must protect the oceans,” Murray advised a information convention.
The new proposed MPA off the west coast of Vancouver Island, often known as the Tang.ɢwan – ḥačxwiqak – Tsig̱is MPA, moved ahead this week after Canada and native First Nations signed a memorandum of understanding to cooperatively handle the realm.
