In a significant transfer, the Centre has determined to dissolve all 62 military cantonment boards in the country discountinuing the “archaic colonial legacies”. The authorities has stated that civilian areas below the cantonmnet will be handed over to municipal our bodies and military space will be became army stations.
The first city to shed its cantonment standing is pitcturesque Yol in Kangra district of Himachal (*62*).
A notification was issued by the ministry on April 27 for altering the standing of the cantonment.
How citizens will benefit?
The sources stated the transfer will show helpful to all stakeholders and that civilians, who till now weren’t getting entry to welfare schemes of the state authorities by the municipality, will now find a way to avail them.
“As far as the Army is concerned, it too could now focus on the development of the military station,” stated a supply.
There had been 56 cantonments at the time of Independence and 6 extra had been notified after 1947. The final Cantonment to be notified was Ajmer in 1962.
Civilian residents of the cantonments usually don’t get advantages of welfare schemes of the respective state governments as the army services are ruled by cantonment boards by the Defence Estates Department of the Ministry of Defence.
The sources stated there was a preferred demand from civilian residents and in addition state governments for the excision of cantonments.
A substantial portion of the defence price range is spent on the improvement of civil areas of the cantonments, famous an official.
He stated due to the ever-increasing enlargement of civil areas of cantonments, there may be stress on prime defence land in these services.
“Cantonments are colonial structures and military stations can be better administered by taking such steps,” stated one other official.
