Eleven boat tragedies, together with the one at Tanur in Malappuram district of Kerala on May 7, have claimed over 200 lives in the State in the past 10 decades.

Following is the chronology of boat tragedies ranging from 1924 to the one on Sunday that claimed 22 lives.

  • 1924: 24 individuals drowned when a boat from Kollam to Kottayam sank at Palana. Mahakavi Kumaranasan, one of the triumvirate poets of Kerala, died in the tragedy.
  • March 19, 1980: 30 lives had been misplaced when a ferry carrying pilgrims of an area church at Kannamaly in Kochi sank.
  • September 25, 1983: 18 individuals died in a boat tragedy whereas they had been returning after a church feast in the Vallarpadam space of Ernakulam district.
  • July 27, 2002: 29 individuals died when a closely loaded A53 boat of the Kerala Water Transport division, which left from Muhamma in Alappuzha, capsized in the Vembanad Lake close to Kumarakom in Kottayam district of the State. The deceased included 15 ladies and a nine-month-old child, moreover a number of job aspirants who had been on their approach to Kottayam to look for a PSC examination.
  • August 30, 2004: 7 boat employees drowned off Kollam coast.
  • January 2, 2005: 4 individuals, together with an Arab, drowned in Vembanad Lake.
  • February 20, 2007: A college picnic changed into a tragedy when 14 youngsters and three academics died when the boat they had been driving on took on water as a consequence of a leak and overturned at Thattekad close to the Periyar river in Ernakulam district of the State. It was later revealed that there have been 61 passengers on the boat which had a most capability of six.
  • September 30, 2009: 45 vacationers died when a double-decker passenger boat, Jalakanyaka, capsized in one of the deepest components of the Mullaperiyar reservoir. There had been over 80 passengers on the boat which had a capability of 75.
  • December 12, 2011: 2 individuals died when a boat capsized at Kuthiyathodu in Alappuzha district of the State.
  • January 26, 2013: 4 individuals died when a passenger boat capsized in the Punnakkad space of Alappuzha.
  • June 11, 2013: Two died when a ‘ shikara‘ capsized in the Punnakkad space of Alappuzha.
  • May 7, 2023: 22 individuals, majority of them ladies and kids, died when a double-decker leisure boat capsized whereas on a boat experience close to an estuary near the Thoovaltheeram seaside in the Tanur space of Malappuram district.
