Even as a whopping 1.17 lakh individuals travelled within the Kochi Water Metro on High Court-Vypeen and Vyttila-Kakkanad routes through the previous fortnight, not all of the 9 ferries have been deployed within the two corridors.

Referring to the lengthy queues at terminals, NGOs and passengers’ associations mentioned many more individuals would have benefited had all of the 9 vessels been deployed every day for operations. Each of the 50-seat ferries can accommodate as much as 100 passengers.

Responding to the matter and stories of a few ferries being withdrawn from service for upkeep on the Cochin Shipyard, Water Metro sources mentioned they have been working ferries within the High Court-Vypeen hall each quarter-hour. This has resulted in a mean of over 9,000 individuals counting on the service as in comparison with the estimated 2,900 commuters a day on the stretch. This went as much as 11,000 commuters on just a few days. The unique plan was to function the ferries at this frequency throughout peak hours and at lesser frequency throughout the remainder of the day.

Despite demand, more ferries cannot be launched within the hall for the reason that State Water Transport division (SWTD) ferry jetty and the Vypeen-Fort Kochi ro-ro jetty are positioned near the Water Metro jetty. Too many vessels jostling for area within the space just isn’t very best, whereas growing the frequency of providers may trigger fatigue to crew members.

The frequency of providers on the Vyttila-Kakkanad stretch too was elevated contemplating demand from commuters. Still, there are occasions after they have to attend to get tickets. While 4 ferries are working from the High Court jetty, two are being operated from the Vyttila jetty. The three different vessels are getting used as spare boats or withdrawn from service for periodic maintenance. In addition, every of the hybrid ferries in operation must be recharged each hour, the sources added.

The shipyard is predicted to ship two more ferries by June-end.
