In an effort to guard residents from digital threats, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) on Friday stated it has issued instructions to telecom service suppliers (TSPs) for blocking 28,200 cellular handsets and re-verification of related 20 lakh cellular connections.
DoT, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), and state polices have joined arms to curb the misuse of telecom sources in cyber-crime and monetary frauds.
“This collaborative effort aims to dismantle networks of fraudsters and protect citizens from digital threats,” the DoT stated in an announcement.
An evaluation by MHA and state polices discovered that 28,200 cellular handsets had been misused in varied cybercrimes. Also, a whopping 20 lakh numbers had been used with these cellular handsets.
DoT then issued instructions to TSPs to dam 28,200 cellular handsets and to re-confirm 20 lakh cellular connections “linked to these mobile handsets and disconnect failing re-verification”.
Earlier this week, the DoT disconnected a cellular quantity and blocked not less than 20 linked cellular gadgets after complaints of cyber fraud by a person, through its internet portal ‘Chakshu’.
Chakshu is a web-based service which facilitates residents to report suspected fraud.
“The unified approach demonstrates a shared commitment towards public safety and to safeguard the integrity of telecommunications infrastructure and ensure a secure digital environment,” stated the DoT.
