EC Defers Kerala Rajya Sabha Bypoll Over Covid-19 Second Wave

Citing the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Election Commission Friday determined to defer a proposed Rajya Sabha bypoll for a seat from Kerala. The Commission mentioned that Kerala Congress (M) chief Jose Okay Mani had resigned as a Rajya Sabha member from Kerala on January 11 this yr. His time period within the higher home was until July, 2024.

“As per the provisions of Section 151A of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, the emptiness is required to be stuffed, by way of bye election inside six months from date of incidence of emptiness, offered that the rest of the time period in relation to the emptiness is one yr or extra,” it observed. The EC had not yet announced any date for the proposed bypoll. The Commission said it reviewed the matter on Friday and decided that due to the outbreak of the second wave of COVID-19 in the country, “it would not be appropriate to hold the said by election till the pandemic situation significantly improves” and circumstances grow to be conducive to carry the byelection.

The ballot panel mentioned it is going to take any additional determination within the matter at an “acceptable time sooner or later” after taking inputs from the state concerned and assessing the pandemic situation from mandated authorities like the national and state disaster management authorities.
