EC Seeks Report After Locals in South 24 Parganas Claim Central Forces Opened Fire

The Election Commission on Saturday sought a report from ballot observers on an alleged incident of firing by central forces in Deganga constituency of South 24 Parganas — the place voting is underway — after such allegations had been levelled by locals. A senior election official stated the workplace of CEO Ariz Aftab has acquired video footages, in which villagers are seen alleging that central forces opened fireplace close to a sales space in Kurulgacha space of Deganga to chase them away.

“We have sought a quick report on the matter from the poll observers there,” he stated. However, a Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) officer posted on the sales space, the place the locals claimed pictures have been fired, stated the allegations made are “baseless”.

“Everything is fine here. The voting exercise is going on very peacefully. There was no incident of firing anywhere in this area,” he said. Polling is underway for the fifth part of meeting elections in 45 constituencies of West Bengal.

During the fourth part, on April 10, 4 individuals had been killed after the CISF personnel opened fireplace in “self defence” outdoors a sales space in Cooch Behar district’s Sitalkuchi space.
