The authorities on Friday deferred the implementation of the import restriction order on laptops and computers (together with pill computers) by about three months till October 31, a transfer that offers extra time to digital corporations to import these units with out a licence.
Now, these corporations would want to take a licence from the federal government to import these units from November 1. On August 3, the federal government put the import of these units below a licence regime with fast impact. (*31*), trade raised points with the federal government on the notification.
The Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), in an order issued late on Friday, stated the notification dated August 3 (Thursday) shall be efficient from November 1. “Import consignments can be cleared till October 31, 2023 without a licence for restricted imports. For clearance of import consignments with effect from November 1, 2023, a valid licence for restricted imports is required,” it stated.Â
It added {that a} “liberal transitional arrangement is provided for import of laptops, tablets, all-in-one personal computers, ultra-small form factor computers and servers … till October 31, 2023”. The transfer will provide a breather to the businesses which have been on tenterhooks following Thursday’s order.
The restrictions have been imposed for safety causes and the necessity to promote home manufacturing. The transfer will even curtail in-bound shipments of these items from international locations like China and Korea. The import curbs will enable the Centre to maintain a detailed watch on the areas from the place the merchandise are coming, officers stated.
The choice will even spur home manufacturing at a time when India has recognized electronics manufacturing as a key precedence space for its future progress ambitions and is hoping to draw investments from world biggies seeking to diversify their operations exterior China.
Under the PLI 2.0 (production-linked incentive scheme) IT {hardware} scheme, 44 corporations have already been registered and two corporations have filed their functions on the scheme portal by July 31. The corporations can submit functions till August 30.
