Govt Extends Mandatory Fitness Testing of Heavy Goods, Passenger Vehicles Till Oct 2024

Fitness testing for private autos (non-transport) is completed on the time of renewal of registration (after 15 years)

The authorities has prolonged the date of obligatory health testing by means of a registered Automated Testing Station (ATS) for heavy items and passenger motor autos by 18 months to October 1, 2024.

Earlier, the Road Transport and Highways Ministry (MoRTH) had mentioned that health testing for heavy items autos and heavy passenger motor autos by means of an ATS can be obligatory from April 1, 2023.

However, within the case of medium items autos, medium passenger motor autos and light-weight motor autos (transport), the MoRTH had mentioned the requirement can be made obligatory from June 1, 2024.

“Now, in view of the current standing of readiness of the Automated testing Stations (ATS) throughout the nation, MoRTH has determined to increase the date for obligatory testing by means of ATS in respect of Heavy Goods Vehicles/Heavy Passenger Motor Vehicles, Medium Goods Vehicles / Medium Passenger Motor Vehicles and Light Motor autos (Transport) to 1st October 2024,” the ministry mentioned in an announcement.

An Automated Testing Station (ATS) uses mechanical equipment to automate the various tests required to check the fitness of a vehicle. The ministry in 2021 said entities like special purpose vehicles, state governments, companies, associations and bodies of individuals may be allowed to open ATS for testing the fitness of both personal and transport vehicles.

Fitness testing for personal vehicles (non-transport) is done at the time of renewal of registration (after 15 years).
