Gujarat Civic Poll Results: BJP Wins Big In Vadodara, Jamnagar, Rajkot; AAP Makes Inroads, Congress Routed

Ahmedabad: The much-awaited Gujarat Municiple Corporation elections results are out and ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BPJ) has won it big by securing local bodies in Vadodara, Rajkot, Jamnagar and Bhavnagar. As per State Election Commission (SEC), BJP has so far won 300 out of the total 576 seats across six municipal corporations in Gujarat. Congress, the main opposition party, managed to win only 36 seats. The Congress has not won a single seat in Surat where the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), a new entrant, made impressive inroads by bagging eight seats.

Meanwhile, the Bahujan Samaj Party has won three seats in Jamnagar.

A total of 192 seats in Ahmedabad, 72 in Rajkot, 64 in Jamnagar, 52 in Bhavnagar, 76 in Vadodara and 120 in Surat were up for grabs in the local body polls which was held on February 21.

In Vadodara, the BJP has captured 66 seats out of the total 76 of the VMC, the rest going to the opposition Congress. In Rajkot, the BJP has captured 68 seats out of the total 72 seats of the RMC, the rest 4 seats won by the Congress.

In Jamnagar, the BJP has captured 50 seats out of the total 64 of the JMC, while the opposition Congress won 11 seats and the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) took three seats, opening their account in Gujarat.

In Bhavnagar, the BJP has captured 44 seats out of the total 52 of the BMC, the rest going to the opposition Congress.

After Congress’ poor performance, several city party chiefs tendered their resignations earlier in the day. Ashok Dangar, Rajkot Congress president tendered his resignation. Similarly, Babu Rayka, Surat Congress president and Prakash Vaghani, Bhavnagar Congress president, also submitted their resignations.

The AAP, which had fielded 470 candidates across six corporations, won eight seats in Surat. Its workers celebrated by cutting cakes after the party won two panels (each having four candidates) in the city.

After sweeping the local body polls, Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani and Deputy Chief Minister Nitin Patel expressed gratitude to the voters and BJP workers for the results.
