Indian nationwide workforce hockey player Varun Kumar, 28, has been booked by town police for rape and dishonest underneath the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012, for allegedly sexually assaulting a 17-year-old minor woman in 2019.

Mr. Kumar is an Arjuna awardee and was a part of the Indian workforce that received the gold medal on the Hangzhou Asian Games in 2023. He has 141 senior caps and can also be a 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games silver medallist.

The complainant, now an airline staffer, was being skilled for volleyball at a Sports Authority of India facility in Bengaluru when she reportedly met Mr. Kumar. In her grievance, she mentioned that Mr. Kumar had befriended her on social media and needed to satisfy her in individual.

But when she turned down his request, she alleged that he emotionally blackmailed her and persuaded her to satisfy him by his buddies. She mentioned the 2 met and finally entered right into a relationship.

The sufferer mentioned that the accused took her to the Jayanagar locality in Bengaluru in July 2019 for a dinner date, booked a lodge room on the pretext of chatting, and initiated a bodily relationship together with her, promising marriage, regardless of understanding that she was a minor on the time. The sufferer alleged that over the following 5 years, Mr. Kumar had a bodily relationship together with her many instances, and took her to many accommodations.

She mentioned that Mr. Kumar had come to her home when her father handed away to convey his condolences, and had been avoiding her since then. The sufferer alleged that when she requested Mr. Kumar to marry her, he allegedly refused and even threatened to make their non-public movies public on social media.

A senior police official mentioned {that a} case had been registered towards the hockey player on Monday following a grievance by the sufferer.

“Though the victim is a major now, she was a minor when the accused initiated a physical relationship back in 2019. So we have also booked the hockey player under POCSO Act, 2012 apart from rape and cheating,” the official mentioned.
