India has banned the export of onions till March 2024, an official notification issued late Thursday night stated. The DGFT notification stated the export of onions will, nevertheless, be allowed based mostly on the permission granted by the central authorities to different nations based mostly on their request. In 2022-23, the federal government maintained 2.51 lakh tonnes of onion as buffer inventory.

Buffer inventory is maintained to satisfy any exigencies and for worth stabilisation if charges go up considerably in the course of the lean provide season.

Rabi onion harvested throughout April-June accounts for 65 per cent of India’s onion manufacturing and meets the patron’s demand till the Kharif crop is harvested in October-November.
