Srinagar: The authorities in Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday (April 20) issued an avalanche warning for eight districts of the Union Territory. The State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) issued a ‘low’ hazard degree avalanche warning for seven districts and a ‘medium’ hazard degree for one district for the following 24 hours. 

Avalanche warning for 8 districts

“Avalanche with ‘low’ danger level is likely to occur above 2,400-3,200 metres over Doda, Kishtwar, Poonch, Ramban, Baramulla, Kupwara and Bandipora districts in the next 24 hours. Avalanche with ‘medium’ danger level is likely to occur above 2,800 metres over the Ganderbal district,” the catastrophe administration authority officers stated.

The authority additionally suggested individuals in these districts to take precautions and keep away from venturing into avalanche-prone areas until additional orders. Many areas within the increased reaches of Jammu and Kashmir obtained contemporary snowfall whereas the plains have been lashed by rain over the previous three days.

Earlier in February this 12 months, two foreigners have been killed in an avalanche in Jammu and Kashmir’s Gulmarg. As many as 19 stranded vacationers from abroad and 2 native guides have been rescued. Baramulla police acknowledged that three groups, comprising 21 foreigners and two native guides, went to Affarwat Gulmarg for snowboarding. The snowboarding groups have been trapped in Hapatkhud Kangdori, located in Gulmarg, the place they went snowboarding.

On receiving data, Baramulla police mobilised joint rescue groups of JKP and the tourism division and they reached the avalanche website.  In a joint operation, personnel of the Indian Army and Jammu and Kashmir Police in February rescued a person buried below a pile of snow after an avalanche in Kupwara.
