Land scam case: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) is likely to query Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren today (January 31) in Ranchi in a cash laundering case probe linked to an alleged land scam.

After over 40 hours of intense drama, throughout which the probe company declared Hemant Soren as ‘untraceable’, the questioning is anticipated to proceed today. Following his go to to Delhi, the Chief Minister’s whereabouts remained unclear for almost 40 hours thereafter. Ending suspense over his whereabouts and intense political drama, Soren reached his official residence in Ranchi by way of highway on Tuesday and chaired a gathering with alliance MLAs.

Soren agrees to document assertion 

In an electronic mail despatched to the ED, Hemant Soren has agreed to document his assertion on January 31 at 1 pm at his residence and alleged that the ED’s actions had been “motivated by political agenda” to disrupt the state authorities’s functioning and claimed that its insistence to document his assertion once more on or earlier than January 31 “reeked of malice”.

“Your insistence to record a further statement of the undersigned on or before 31 January 2024 reeks of malice and reveals your political agenda to disrupt the functioning of the State Government and prevent an elected representative of the people from discharging his official duties,” Soren’s letter to the ED stated.

“The “acts are malafide and politically motivated (and) stand vindicated. The issuance of summon to the undersigned is wholly vexatious and in colourable train of powers given by the statute,” the letter added.

ED seizes two luxurious automobiles, large money, paperwork

The federal company searched the 5/1 Shanti Niketan residence of the JMM chief in south Delhi on Monday, and camped there for nearly 13 hours in order to query him in a cash laundering case linked to an alleged land deal in Jharkhand, officers stated.

ED recorded Soren’s assertion

The ED recorded Soren’s assertion for the primary time in the case on January 20 after its investigators went to his official residence in Ranchi. The assertion was recorded below the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) through the almost seven hours the investigators spent at his residence.

On January 20, ED had interrogated CM Hemant Soren for about 7-8 hours. Still, the ED inquiry was not accomplished.  It has been realized that the contemporary summons was issued because the questioning had not been accomplished that day. The central company issued a contemporary summons to him asking him to verify his availability for questioning on both January 29 or January 31, the official sources stated, including Soren had despatched a communication to the company however had not confirmed the date and time for questioning.

What is the case?

The investigation pertains to an enormous racket of unlawful change of possession of land by the mafia in Jharkhand, in accordance to the company.

The matter is expounded to the acquisition and sale of land occupied by the military. Army land was purchased and bought in Jharkhand on the idea of a pretend title and deal with. Ranchi Municipal Corporation had lodged an FIR in this regard. ED had began the investigation by registering the Enforcement Case Information Report (ECIR) on the idea of the identical FIR. 

The Enforcement Directorate has arrested 14 folks in reference to the case, together with Chhavi Ranjan, a 2011-batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer who had beforehand served because the director of the state social welfare division and deputy commissioner of Ranchi.
