West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has requested State ministers to start a sit-in outside Nobel laureate Amartya Sen’s residence in Santiniketan in Birbhum district to protest in opposition to the Visva-Bharati’s eviction notice, an official stated.
During a cupboard assembly on Tuesday, Ms. Banerjee requested MSME Minister Chandranath Sinha, the native MLA, to lead the protest, which can be joined by Education Minister Bratya Basu and Urban Development Minister Firhad Hakim.
She requested them not to transfer from the spot even when the central college authorities ship bulldozers to take possession of the land.
Bauls and different people artistes from the district have to be concerned within the demonstration, and numerous cultural programmes must be organised there, she instructed the ministers, in accordance to the official.
Singer Kabir Suman and painter Subhaprasanna may also be a part of the programme on May 6 and seven, the official stated, quoting her.
“The CM advised them not to move an inch even if Visva-Bharati sends bulldozers to take possession,” he stated.
Ms. Banerjee had final week stated that she would start a sit-in in Santiniketan over the problem.
Visva-Bharati had despatched an eviction notice to Mr. Sen on April 19, asking him to vacate 13 decimals of the 1.38 acres of land of his residence inside May 6.
The college has been claiming that Mr. Sen has 1.38 acres of land on the Santiniketan campus, which is greater than his authorized entitlement of 1.25 acres. The economist has earlier asserted that many of the land he’s holding on the Santiniketan campus was bought from the market by his father whereas another plots had been taken on lease.
Set up in 1921 by Rabindranath Tagore, Visva-Bharati is West Bengal’s solely central college, and the Prime Minister is its Chancellor.
Ms. Banerjee had handed over land-related paperwork to Mr. Sen throughout a go to to his residence in January when the Nobel laureate was at Santiniketan.
