Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Okay. Sangma on May 12 met Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia in New Delhi and submitted proposals to set up heliports and a world airport within the northeastern State to enhance tourism.
The present Shillong airport has a brief runway, which isn’t possible for touchdown of huge plane, whereas the Baljek airport in Garo Hills district remained unutilised, an official stated.
“Met Hon’ble Union Minister for @MoCA_GoI, Sh. @JM_Scindia ji & presented proposals— to establish heliports in Shillong & Tura, to set up an international airport in Meghalaya & to operationalize the Baljek Airport. These proposals are aimed at boosting our state’s tourism potential & economic growth through air connectivity,” Mr. Sangma stated on Twitter.
Notably, the Meghalaya High Court has lately directed the State Government to establish just a few pockets of land for the development of a greenfield airport as the present facility can’t be prolonged to accommodate the touchdown of huge plane.
At current ATRs and smaller plane are touchdown on the present airport and the size of the runway and the encompassing hills don’t make it possible for wide-bodied plane to name on the facility in Umroi close to right here, the Court had noticed.
The Court, nevertheless, made it clear that it’ll not intrude or impose its will if each the State and the Central Governments are reluctant to set up a brand new airport.
