Nigeria’s authorities has indefinitely suspended the operations of U.S. social media big Twitter, Information Minister Lai Mohammed mentioned on Friday.
In an announcement, he cited “the persistent use of the platform for activities that are capable of undermining Nigeria’s corporate existence”. He did not elaborate on that reference, nor was it immediately clear what the minister meant by a suspension of operations.
The statement comes two days after the social media giant deleted a remark on President Muhammadu Buhari’s official account for breaking its regulations.
Twitter was still working in Nigeria soon after Friday’s statement. When asked about the decision, ministry special assistant Segun Adeyemi told AFP: “I can’t answer technicalities… operations will be suspended indefinitely.”
Twitter had earlier this week deleted a tweet by Buhari in which he reportedly threatened to punish pro-Biafra groups blamed for escalating attacks on government and security authorities, local media reported.
The social media firm said Buhari’s tweet violated its “abusive behaviour” coverage, resulting in a 12-hour suspension of his account.
