Sixteen groups registered with the United Kaching Students (Meitei-led organisation) for the soccer match in Delhi over the past weekend. The match was received by the Kuki soccer group
They don’t see eye to eye, and, if wanted, they practice weapons at one another. However, 2,450 km away from their villages in Manipur, the identical younger individuals turned half of a soccer match in Delhi that noticed camaraderie, respect and love for sports activities. The kids participated in a soccer match, which was organised by a Meitei-led scholar organisation, UNIKAS (United Kakching Students), whereas the match was received by the Kuki-led soccer group.
Keeping apart the anxiousness triggered by 5-month-lengthy ethnic battle, common updates about violence, arson and clashes in and round their respective hometowns in Manipur, Kukis registered for the 2-day soccer match organised by UNIKAS in Delhi.
News 18 spoke with the scholar leaders, who satisfied their respective communities and made their fellow buddies to take part for the sake of their “love for football”. The college students name Delhi the “mainland” the place they really feel “safe”. The match was organised at Delhi’s Burari stadium on October 14-15.
Sixteen groups registered with the UNIKAS for the match. The member-college students of UNIKAS are from Manipur’s Kakching city the place the Meitei inhabitants dominates. And Kakching is positioned close to Moreh – the world that has been witnessing ethnic violence for the previous 5 months. Of the 16 groups, two had been from the Kuki group, 11 had been from Meitei, two from Delhi and Haryana, whereas one group was from Nagaland.
It has been seen that the youths of northeast are identified for their curiosity in sports activities and music. The area has given famend sports activities personalities akin to Mary Kom, Mira Bai Chanu, Taba Chake and plenty of extra.
Their Innate Camaraderie
The college students from each the communities stated they had been “no more friends” however it’s their love for soccer that has introduced them collectively. Bonit Naorem, secretary of UNIKAS, advised News18, “We only thought about sports, and nothing else. We used to do such things in our home states too. But everyone is reeling under fear and anxiety there. But we are in Delhi, this is mainland. We feel safer here.”
“We asked all Manipuri students to join us and we also requested the local students to participate. So, we got two Kuki teams registered with us, and we are happy that our Kuki friends won the cup,” Naorem added.
Although Kuki college students are proud of the event between the 2 communities, they are saying their anxiousness doesn’t disappear. “We used to be good friends. But now we are not that close. We maintain distance from each other. The memories of what happened back home linger. But we all came together for our love for sports, specially football,” stated Albert Haokip, chief of the Kuki group that received the match.
