New Delhi: In a brand new regulation that will probably be relevant from the academic session of 2021-2022, PhD has been made mandatory for recruitment of teachers in universities, aside from cracking the National Eligibility Test (NET). The rule, launched in 2018, will probably be carried out this year.
From now, for the appointment to the put up of Assistant professor, candidates must possess a PhD diploma.
What was the standards earlier:
Earlier, these with PhD diploma or certified with NET masters diploma have been eligible to use for assistant professor, the entry-level place, in universities. During the appointment of Assistant Professors, a weightage of 5 to 10 marks was given to the candidates who handed the NET examination, whereas PhD candidates got a weightage of 30 marks. This result in tipping the size towards those that simply cleared NET exams.
In 2018, these new laws of the University Grants Commission (UGC) have been introduced by then Union Minister Prakash Javadekar. “The new recruitment for universities will be only PhD holders. We have given time of three years. So from 2021, assistant professor (entry-level position) will have to hold PhDs,” Javadekar had stated.
