He will take over as CJI on April 24, 2021 after the retirement of incumbent CJI, SA Bobde on April 23.
“President Ram Nath Kovind appoints Justice NV Ramana as the next Chief Justice of India, with effect from 24th April 2021,” the federal government stated in a press release.
Justice NV Ramana is the senior-most choose within the high court docket after the CJI. Born on August 27, 1957, justice Ramana has a tenure until August 26, 2022.
According to Supreme Courts official web site, Justice Ramana “has practiced in the High Court of Andhra Pradesh, central and Andhra Pradesh Administrative Tribunals and the Supreme Court of India in civil, criminal, constitutional, labour, service, and election matters. He has specialised in constitutional, criminal, service and inter-state river laws.”
Justice Bobde was sworn in because the forty seventh Chief Justice of India in November 2019, succeeding Justice (retired) Ranjan Gogoi.
