Republic Day 2024: 1,132 security personnel awarded gallantry and service medals

Republic Day 2024: On the eve of India’s seventy fifth Republic Day, over 1,000 security personnel have been awarded with totally different classes of gallantry and service medals, the Ministry of Home Affairs on Thursday stated in a press release.  This contains 277 gallantry medals.

After the latest restructuring of medals, a complete of 1,132 personnel of police, hearth service, house guard and civil defence and correctional service have been awarded gallantry and service medals on the event of the Republic Day, 2024, the MHA stated in a press release.

Gallantry Medals – Police Service

Among nearly all of the 277 gallantry awards, 119 personnel from Left Wing Extremism affected areas, 133 personnel from the Jammu and Kashmir area and 25 personnel from different areas are being awarded for his or her gallant motion.

While 275 personnel have been awarded the Medal for Gallantry (GM), two have been awarded the President’s Medal for Gallantry (PMG). The prime class PMG has been accorded to 2 Border Security Force (BSF) personnel posthumously for his or her “outstanding contribution in the prestigious task of peacekeeping as part of the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUSCO) as members of the 15th Congo Contingent of BSF at the Moroccan Rapid Deployment Battalion (MORRDB) camp at Butembo.”

Notably, BSF head constables Sanwala Ram Vishnoi and Shishu Pal Singh have been killed within the line of motion in Congo in July 2022.

Out of the 277 Gallantry medals, 275 have been awarded to 72 personnel from J&Okay Police, 18 personnel from Maharashtra, 26 personnel from Chhattisgarh, 23 personnel from Jharkhand, 15 personnel from Odisha, 8 personnel from Delhi, 65 personnel from CRPF, 21 personnel from SSB, and the remaining personnel from the opposite States/UTs and CAPFs.

President’s Medal for Gallantry (PMG) and Medal for Gallantry (GM) are awarded on the bottom of Rare Conspicuous Act of Gallantry and Conspicuous Act of Gallantry respectively in saving life and property, or in stopping crime or arresting criminals, the chance incurred being estimated with due regard to the obligations and duties of the officer involved. 

Service (PSM)​ and Service (MSM)

Out of 102 President’s Medal for Distinguished Service (PSM), 94 have been awarded to Police Service, 04 to Fire Service and 04 to Civil Defence and Home Guard Service.  

Out of 753 Medal for Meritorious Service (MSM), 667 have been awarded to Police Service, 32 to Fire Service, 27 to Civil Defence& Home Guard Service and 27 to Correctional Service.

State-wise break up of medals awarded

The most gallantry medals have been given to Jammu and Kashmir police personnel at 72, adopted by 65 to the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) troops, 18 from Maharashtra, 26 from Chhattisgarh, 23 from Jharkhand, 15 from Odisha, eight personnel from Delhi Police and 21 personnel from the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB).

Types of Gallantry/Service medals

The authorities, in recent times, has taken steps to rework the Gallantry/Service medals. Sixteen Gallantry/Service medals (for Police, Fire Service, Home Guard & Civil Defence, and Correctional Service) have now been merged into the next 4 medals:

  • President’s Medal for Gallantry (PMG)
  • Medal for Gallantry (GM)
  • President’s Medal for Distinguished Service (PSM)
  • Medal for Meritorious Service (MSM)
