LOS ANGELES: A restricted-version stamp honoring the late UCLA basketball coach John Wooden will go on sale early subsequent yr.
The U.S. Postal Service introduced the stamp on Thursday. He is the second faculty basketball coach to be honored with a stamp, becoming a member of the sport’s inventor, James Naismith, who had a stamp in 1961.
Nearly 18 million Forever stamps can be issued that includes an unique portrait of the coach who guided UCLA to 10 nationwide championships throughout his 27-yr tenure in Westwood, which led to 1975.
Wooden died in 2010 at age 99.
The stamp depicts Wooden at courtside within the early Seventies, targeted on a recreation and sporting a pinstripe swimsuit, patterned tie and black-framed glasses. The title John is in blue and Wooden is in gold in a nod to the varsity’s colours. The picture relies on a photograph by college photographer Norm Schindler.
