Sterlite Copper oxygen plant develops ‘technical snag’; production halted

Vedanta Ltd owned Sterlite Copper Plant which lately, commenced production of medical oxygen at its facility in Tamil Nadu has confronted a ‘technical snag’ in a chilly field resulting in a suspension of production, the corporate stated on Friday.

The facility started production of medical oxygen and the primary set of medical oxygen tankers was dispatched to the beneficiaries on Thursday from the Tuticorin plant, situated about 600 kms from.

In a press release on Friday, the corporate stated, a technical snag has developed within the chilly field at our oxygen plant in Tuticorin, resulting in a short lived pause in production.’ The firm stated it anticipated a ‘minor technical fluctuation’ for the reason that plant remained unattended for 3 years.

A technical skilled group has been onsite from day one to watch the scenario and to supply real-time options to renew production on the earliest.

‘We plan to return to stabilised production quickly,’ the corporate stated.

On Thursday, the corporate stated with the production of medical oxygen, it could initially dispatch two oxygen tankers every day and later it could be ‘scaled up’ by ramping up production.

The oxygen provided is of 98.6 per cent purity and has acquired the required certifications for its use.

The Sterlite copper smelter plant was given approval by the then AIADMK authorities on April 26 at an all-party assembly to provide medical oxygen at its facility for a interval of 4 months on the facility in Tuticorin.

The unit was sealed by the state authorities in May 2018, days after 13 agitators who have been a part of a protest towards the corporate over environmental issues have been killed in police firing throughout a violent anti-Sterlite stir within the southern district.
