Tension Prevails In Assam’s Lakhimpur After Death Of Accused In Police Custody | India News


LAKHIMPUR: Tension prevailed in Assam’s Lakhimpur after an individual accused of cell phone theft died in police custody, resulting in protests in Khelmati space, officers stated. Two police personnel have been positioned below suspension in reference to the incident, they stated. The accused was arrested together with 4 others on costs of cell phone theft and different digital devices by officers of the Khelmati outpost on Wednesday evening.

Lakhimpur Additional Superintendent of Police (Headquarters) L Ok Deka stated the accused, who was sitting on a bench contained in the police station, all of a sudden fell down and was instantly rushed to the civil hospital the place he was declared “brought dead” by medical doctors. The in-charge of Khelmati Outpost, Dipankar Changmai, and one other personnel on responsibility, have been positioned below suspension, the ASP stated.

‘Since the dying occurred contained in the police station, a departmental inquiry can be carried out by an officer of the rank of ASP,” he added. An enormous crowd had gathered in entrance of the police station since early morning to protest towards the incident, and pressure prevailed within the space, with senior law enforcement officials speeding to the spot to manage the scenario, the officers stated.

Deka stated a magisterial inquest can be ordered into the incident and a panel of medical doctors will conduct the autopsy, which can be videographed, to determine the precise explanation for the dying.

‘Reference dying in police custody at Khelmati OP District North Lakhimpur – 1. IC of Khelmati OP has been positioned below suspension together with on responsibility sentry at time of incident. 2. Independent Enquiry has been ordered by Addl SP Biswanath. 3. All obligatory provisions of legislation & instructions of NHRC/AHRC are being adopted 4. DIG NR has been directed to proceed to Khelmati instantly,” Assam Director General of Police G P Singh stated in a put up on X.
