Russia’s state communications watchdog stated on Wednesday it was limiting using Twitter by slowing down its pace, accusing the social media platform of repeatedly failing to take away banned content material from its web site.
Roskomnadzor threatened to block the service fully and stated there have been greater than 3,000 posts containing unlawful content material on it as of Wednesday.
Twitter, like different USÂ social media, is used extensively inside Russia by allies of Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny whose jailing final month prompted nationwide protests.
“The slowing down will be applied on a 100 percent of mobile devices and on 50 percent of non-mobile devices,” the regulator stated in an announcement on its web site.
“If (Twitter) continues to ignore the requirements of the law, the enforcement measures will be continued in line with the response regulations (all the way to blocking),” it stated.
Twitter didn’t instantly reply to an emailed request for remark.
Wednesday’s transfer comes amid mounting efforts by Moscow to exert larger affect over USÂ social media platforms and frustrations over what authorities say is their failure to observe Russian legal guidelines.
Last December, parliament’s decrease home backed large new fines on platforms that fail to delete banned content material and one other invoice that might enable them to be restricted in the event that they “discriminate” in opposition to Russian media.
