On June 11, a tusker identified by totally different names to totally different folks – Longcross, Bogeshwara, and even Mr Kabini – died in Gundre within the Nagarhole-Bandipur forest area in Karnataka.

This Asian elephant had roamed the Kabini backwaters for round 50-60 years. He was an excellent animal as a result of of his lengthy tusks which touched the bottom and crossed one another on the finish.

He got here to be identified lately as Bogeshwara, since he was seen usually within the area known as Bogeshwara in Kabini.

Socio-ecology researcher T.N.C. Vidya, who research Asian elephants within the Kabini area, first noticed this elephant in 2000, when she was doing her Masters on the Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru.

Members of the UK-based Scientific Exploration Society had been collaborating with Prof. Sukumar from IISc, Bengaluru, and so they had been making an attempt to take photos of animals in Kabini and different locations. When she had gone with them to Kabini, they noticed this elephant for the primary time for them.

She named him Longcross, for even then, when he was about 20-30 years previous, his tusks had been so lengthy that they crossed on the finish.
