Water troughs around the arid Girivalam path of Arunchalaeswara temple in Tiruvannamalai city are being filled up for wild animals, particularly noticed deer, by forest officers because of the hovering temperature in the temple city.

The initiative comes because the city has been witnessing harsh climate of around 38 levels Celsius for per week. Also, greater than 40 noticed deer have strayed into human habitations around the Girivalam Path since January. The animals come from the Adinamalai Reserve Forest (RF) in Annamalai Hills. “Increasing numbers of spotted deer in the RF make some of them stray into human habitation around the path, mainly for water. Providing water inside the RF will restrict deer movement within the forest area,” stated N. Srinivasan, forest vary officer (Tiruvannamalai).

Tiruvannamalai vary has seven RFs together with Chippakadu, Athipakkam, Adinamalai, and Sorakolathur, masking 13,000 hectares. At current, Adinamalai RF has 14 huge water troughs in its 900 hectares. On common, every water trough has a capability of 6,000 litres and shall be refilled as soon as each two weeks. Fresh water is delivered to the location by personal tanker operators. Each water trough is situated on the recognized congregating spots of wild animals in the RF, no less than two kms away from the closest water holes like streams and ponds. Filling of water troughs in RFs shall be carried out till May- finish, earlier than the onset of the southwest monsoon.

Preventing noticed deer

Forest officers stated a significant problem in stopping noticed deer from straying into the Girivalam Path is because of rubbish dumping, particularly meals wastes, by pilgrims alongside the 14-km-long path. Such overflowing rubbish bins appeal to a lot of stray canine from the world. Complete fencing of RF alongside the path will stop animals from straying into human habitations in the temple city.
