Half of 10-member girls’s staff is uncertain to compete on the Asian Boxing Championships in Dubai beginning May 21 after strict Covid-19 protocols at Army Sports Institute (ASI) in Pune didn’t allow them to be a part of the continued nationwide camp.

The Boxing Federation of India (BFI) had deliberate collective coaching for the 10-member squad at ASI forward of the match.

However, ASI has allowed boxers to hitch solely in batches. While 5, together with MC Mary Kom, had joined until Friday, the remaining 5 had been allowed to maneuver into ASI solely subsequent week.

Sonia Lather (57 kg) Simranjit Kaur (60 kg) and Lovlina Borgohain (69 kg) are amongst those that have joined the camp.

“The remaining 5 boxers are anticipated to hitch the camp subsequent week,” said a boxing coach.

BFI said that strict protocols at ASI have made things tough.

“Boxers are joining the camp in Pune as per Covid-19 protocols of ASI,” Hemanta Kalita, secretary-general of BFI, advised IANS.

Asked if it could be too late, Kalita insisted that the boxers will fly to Dubai. “Indian staff will take part within the Asian meet in Dubai,” he said without confirming how many will eventually fly.

Last month, several boxers in the women’s camp at Indira Gandhi Sports Complex tested positive for Covid-19 forcing the Sports Authority of India (SAI) to close down the camp. Initially, BFI wanted to shift the camp to Patiala but later opted for the ASI campus in Pune.
