World Bank Vice President calls for continued vigilance against zoonotic diseases

Martin Raiser, Vice President for the South Asia Region, World Bank, on Friday underscored the necessity for continued vigilance against zoonotic diseases.

‘’It requires continued vigilance. Because of the character of those diseases, the issue is we don’t know which the following one goes to be,’‘ Mr. Raiser, who met Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and senior government officials in Thiruvananthapuram, said on Friday.

He pointed out that in India, Kerala is the most forward-thinking in terms of the One Health concept and zoonotic diseases.

‘’We would possibly discover it simple to detect previous ones which have already occurred some other place on this planet, the true trick is, are you able to detect the following one that you just don’t find out about but? And for that, you want continued vigilance,’‘ Mr. Raiser said.

Mr. Raiser also drew attention to a new article, uploaded on the World Bank’s weblog this month, on Kerala’s expertise in tackling the menace brought on by the Giant African Snail.

‘’The One Health idea has gained in significance as a result of increasing populations are coming into new geographic areas, creating extra alternatives for diseases to cross between animals and people,’‘ the article, India: One Health in Action – Fighting the Giant Snail Menace in Kerala, notes.
